Shwmae a croeso i dosbarth Helyg

Hello and welcome to The Willows class

Welcome to Dosbath Helyg! Year 2 have a very exciting year ahead of them!

Our class topic this term is ‘Moon Zoom’. This is an exciting topic based around the theme of space, rockets and aliens! Your child will cover various areas of learning across the curriculum throughout the topic.

Your child will be revisiting and developing mathematical skills they learnt in year 1 with the addition of new skills specific to year 2. They will also engage in Big Maths sessions which develop their mental maths skills.

Each child also has access to Active Learn Primary which is an online numeracy programme. They will have a unique login which will allow them to access a range of mathematical games which aim to develop the skills covered during lessons.

When your child is issued a reading book, please ensure that you read with them regularly and sign their reading record so that we can change their books swiftly. We endeavour to change books at least once a week if books are brought in on time. The purpose of a reading book is to ensure that your child develops strategies to sound out words and blend them together, whilst also reading for meaning and understanding. Please support them in their reading and assist with sounding out unfamiliar words. Your child will engage in various reading activities throughout their lessons as well as one-to-one reading and group guided reading sessions. Your child will be expected to read every day, as little as ten minutes per day can have a huge impact on their learning.

Weekly spelling lists will be given out and will need to be taken home to learn. Please encourage your child to practise their spellings regularly, ready for their test on a Friday.

PE will be on a Thursday. Please provide suitable clothing and footwear. To ensure your child’s clothing is safe and can be found easily, please clearly mark their name on each item. Please also ensure they have a coat, particularly during the autumn and winter months as Year 2 will be participating in 'Curb Craft' an outdoor session dedicated to teaching the importance of road safety.

If there is anything you would like to discuss with either myself or Mrs Clee, please do not hesitate to speak to us. We look forward to an action packed and fun-filled year!
