Welcome to the Cedars

This year will be full of rampaging robots, Roman gladiators and blood, bones and gory bits! We can't wait!

I am Mr Hughes and this is my sixth year at Afon y Felin Primary.  This is will be a truly great year for year 4 and 5 as we have so many exciting themes in store for the year including Space Explorers, Gods of Egypt and Our Planet, Our Future, Our Choice.

We've started off the year with Space Explorers. The children have begun to enjoy learning about our own solar system, the reasons why we have day and night in regards to the sun and moon and the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the sun.  We've found some extremely interesting facts already.  Caian-Joe found out that the Earth and Moon orbit together in total synchronisation, which means we only get to see one side of the moon at all times...how interesting!

Dance lessons are on Mondays and PE is every Wednesday, so please can you ensure your child has shorts, t-shirts and trainers for their lessons, and that no earrings are worn on these days.

It is so important that your child reads to an adult every day. Your child has a home reading record book, which helps tremendously by allowing a two way conversation to happen between you and I about your child's reading.  If there are any problems you feel your child is having with their reading, then this can be brought up in the book, plus it's a great way of letting you know how well they read to other staff members and I in class. I feel that reading is such an important part of your child's education, and if they learn this skill at a young age, then they will find that every other subject becomes that little bit easier. Therefore please make sure your child brings their book in every day.

Homework is given to your child every Friday: this could be in the form of spelling activities, maths worksheets, or just asking them to go over a particular times table in preperation for the following week.

There's always fun to be had, in class and at home!

Your child has a wealth of free software for them to use not only in school, but at home also. This includes the HWB, a learning platform by the Welsh Government, where children can create amazing looking work. Within HWB they also have J2E, where they can practise their spellings and times tables.  If your child has any problems logging in, please do not hesitate to see me.

If you have any questions, my door is always open at the end of day. I hope your child enjoys their time in the Cedars.
